Terra Nostra Chocolate Reviews

Terra Nostra claims to be the "Best Tasting Organic Chocolate Bar." So far I haven't agreed with this, but I'm still holding out hope I will find one that's amazing. That said, however, it's not like I'd be upset to find myself stranded with only a Terra Nostra chocolate bar to eat. : )

Yogurt and Dark Chocolate Luscious Raspberry
10.12.05
Desperate for new flavors to try, we are branching out into chocolates whose ingredients make us raise an eyebrow... sunflower oil? Perhaps in this case it's just part of the yogurt and raspberry ganache that bisects this bar. My first question was, "Where's the chocolate?" It mostly tastes sweet, with just a hint of raspberry. Neither the chocolate lover nor the raspberry lover will be terribly impressed (and as the child of a raspberry lover, I have tasted a lot of raspberry). All that aside, though, the flavor is actually pretty yummy, if you don't think of it as chocolate or raspberry. Plus, organic & fairly traded always earn high marks in our book.
Our rating: 2.75 of 5 bon bons

Intense Dark (73%)
10.26.05
For 73%, this bar has a nice texture and a rich flavor. Of course, we love that it's organic too, although we are a little unsure as to their Equi-Trade designation. (You can find more information on their website. Apparently the Equi-Trade movement is similar to Fair Trade, but still in its infancy. We're just happy that the chocolate manufacturer obviously cares about the workers involved.) Our only complaints are a rather bitter aftertaste, and that tart fruity flavor that some beans produce which I don't like. For others, though, those are pluses.
Our rating: 4 of 5 bon bons

Dark Truffle (57%)
5.3.06
A bar that tries to be both truffle and bar and fails on both counts. If one approached this as a truffle, one would wonder, "Where is the ganache?" There is only the tiniest layer of ganache texture, formed in this case by adding oil to the chocolate. And because there is so little of this, if one would approach this as a bar, one would wonder, "Why is the texture so oily and slimy?" The flavor isn't bad, but it isn't amazing, either, and is somewhat bitter. But at least it's organic and fairly traded.
Our rating: 3.25 of 5 bon bons

Dark Chocolate (57%) Raisins and Pecans
5.14.06
Raisin lovers, rejoice! This bar packs 'em in, and they are plump, moist, and tasty. The bar is nice and thick, and has a pleasing feel on the palate. The pecans, though numerous, are a soft enough nut that their presence didn't register at all, and the chocolate itself, while good, was unremarkable. The raisins are the star.
Our rating: 3.75 of 5 bon bons
